Bike Patrol
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office operates bicycle patrols as a means of effective law enforcement coverage in areas where traditional patrol vehicles are limited.
The bicycle patrol serves as a proactive force in crime prevention, detection and enforcement. In addition to their patrol functions, the bike patrol unit is a valuable asset during holidays and special events where they are utilized to patrol outdoor festivals, fairs and other public events.
Douglas County Sheriff's office patrol bicycles are marked with police markings, and outfitted with lights and a rear carry-all pack for storing police equipment. While performing bicycle patrol duties, Bike Patrol team members wear distinctive police uniforms to easily distinguish them from civilian bike riders.
Deputies who participate in this unit are required to attend a school to receive mandated training and certification. Deputies are taught bicycle safety, maintenance, riding techniques, suspect approach techniques, tactical dismounts, obstacle negotiations, emergency skills and legal issues.
