MINDEN, Nev. (May 22, 2025)––As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) offers tips to make safety a priority on the roads, the water and outdoors.
As one of the first holidays kicking off summer, it can also mean drinking and impaired driving. If your plans include alcohol or cannabis, DCSO urges you to plan and make safe choices including designating a sober driver, arranging alternative transportation and never driving under the influence.
“Our desire is to prevent tragedies before they happen,” said Sheriff Dan Coverley. “Enjoy the weekend but be mindful of risks that could cost you your life or others’ lives.”
Sunny days mean more time on the water and with that comes the responsibility to practice water safety. Before launching a boat or getting on the water, be prepared with the following:
- Ensure every passenger has a life jacket
- Do not operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Maintain safe speeds and watch for other vessels
- Be alert to changing weather conditions
DCSO marine units will be patrolling Lake Tahoe and Topaz Lake throughout the weekend to ensure compliance and assist where needed.
With higher temps and warm weather expected for the weekend, it’s the first time for many to be out and exposed to the elements. “We encourage you to not overdo it,” said Coverley. “Remember to stay cool and hydrated. Drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks if you are being active, never leave children or pets in parked vehicles and recognize the signs of heat-related illness.”
